The CoE is funded by Africa's leading and most dynamic telecommunications company, Telkom SA and the Technology and Human Resources for Industry Programme (THRIP) which supports and funds university-industry collaborations.
 
The Technology and Human Resources for Industry Programme (THRIP) is a partnership programme which challenges companies to match government funding for innovative research and development in South Africa. Companies which have taken up the challenge in collaboration with the Nelson Mandela University Telkom Centre of Excellence are:
